Amber Wood
What makes Amber Wood so special? It isn’t the wide range of state-of-the art facilities. It isn’t the chic décor that runs throughout the purpose-built home. It isn’t even the beautiful grounds and breathtaking views.
Of course these all stand up proud in their own right. But above all is the remarkable relationship between the residents and staff. You have to visit to truly appreciate this. The specialist nursing, residential and dementia care home is run by a highly-trained team of people that genuinely care about its residents. The home also holds a Butterfly Service kite mark which endorses the great work it does in offering outstanding dementia care.
One of the activities Amber Wood is most proud of are the vegetable and herb gardens where the home takes fresh produce to a whole new level. The residents eagerly get involved in growing, cultivating, picking, cooking and eating some wonderful organic vegetables like salads, peas, beans, garlic, carrots and tomatoes.
The home has close links with the community, which sees the local priest perform a church service once a week. While the local school comes along to take part in events such as this summers 1950s themed beach day complete with sandpit, fish and chips, coconut shy and Punch and Judy show.
Life at Amber Wood
As a newly purpose built home, Amber Wood offers some fantastic facilities from treatment rooms and library to sensory gardens and a mini bus for outings.
As an advocate of SONAS therapy, the home sees first-hand how this innovative technique can make a dramatic difference to residents. Therapists use a variety of exercises during individual and small group sessions to stimulate different senses. It has incredibly effective results – residents come out of themselves, become more alert and responsive.
The SONAS therapy is complemented by a treatment room, which offers everything from reflexology and chiropody, as well as the ever popular hairdressing salon. The well-stocked library is perfect for some quiet time, while the bar and lounge areas are great spaces for socialising and catching up with fellow residents.
The home promotes an active lifestyle and offers a full and varied programme of activties designed to suit all tastes. While access to a private mini bus means that residents can be transported on some wonderful outings, from museums to local eateries.

As a Butterfly Service home, we use this philosophy day to day. We are very informal in our care and the fact we have no uniform helps break down the barriers. It works really well as residents and staff feel right at home here. Cecilia Dall, Senior Carer
Cecilia Dall, Senior Carer
As a qualified dementia link worker, Cecilia brings to her role and to other employees a wealth of specialist dementia care knowledge and experience. As well as caring for residents, her job is to supervise staff and their training.

I think I have the best job – it can be really rewarding in so many different ways. Michelle Seal, Activities Co-ordinator
Michelle Seal, Activities Co-ordinator
Michelle has moved from the USA to work at Amber Wood. Her passion in caring for the elderly led her to lobbying for better elderly rights and benefits in Pennsylvania before taking up her current role.
In addition to organising the activities programme and outings twice a week, she provides SONAS therapy to the residents and has seen some amazing results.

I maintain the gardens and hold a gardening club once a week. Residents really enjoy growing the vegetables and even helping to paint the timber borders surrounding the flowers. Tom Kerks, Gardener
Tom Kerks, Gardener
Tom took on the gardening role as it combined many pleasures – working outdoors but most importantly bringing cheer to the elderly.
